Choosing bench cushion fabric
For a kitchen banquette or entryway bench, choose a stain-resistant performance fabric with a water-based or bleach-cleanable cleaning code. For a window seat in the sun, look for fade resistance. Outdoors, choose a fabric made for outdoor use, which also resists moisture and mildew.
Long cushions and yardage
Bench cushions are often longer than the 54-inch width of the fabric. A railroaded fabric lets a long cushion be cut in one piece without a seam. To work out yardage, measure the top, the bottom and the strip around the sides, add about an inch all round for seams, and lay the pieces out on a 54-inch-wide strip.
